Take a trip back in time to the age of ancient healers, herbal alchemists and the origin of authentic Indian Ayurveda. The contributions of early healers to the creation of herbal remedies is what has paved the way for the many modern scientific discoveries today. So, what better than a combination of the two? Modern problems require modern solutions thus leading to the innovative combination of Allopathy and Ayurveda to create potent remedies to treat the ailments of our time. Today, we discuss the many benefits of one such herb: Ashwagandha.
The word Ashwagandha is Sanskrit for “Scent of the horse”, which refers to both its unique smell and ability to increase one’s strength and virility- in essence, giving one the strength and virility of a horse. Additionally, the root of the plant is said to emit a “horsey” smell and the literal Sanskrit breakdown of its given name has the word ‘Ashva’ which means “horse” and ‘Gandha’ which means “smell”. Although several parts of the plant are used, the root is the most potent source as a food supplement.
Known by many names like “winter cherry” or “Indian ginseng”, this power-packed member of the nightshade family is a versatile plant that is used in therapeutic powders, pastes, elixirs, tablets and capsules.
For over 3000 years, Ashwagandha has been used in traditional Indian medicine and is one of the most important herbs of Ayurveda, with the plant’s powdered root being highly sought after for its wide-ranging health benefits such as being a healthy tonic, an aphrodisiac, a diuretic, anthelmintic, astringent, thermogenic and stimulant. It has been used for many millennia by Ayurvedic practitioners to relieve stress and improve the body’s metabolism making it a popular dietary supplement for those mindful of their health and wellness.
Among its many benefits, Ashwagandha is said to have anti-inflammatory properties, immunity boosters and the ability to regulate blood sugar levels. It is said to have the ability to relieve stress, improve learning and memory power, as well as combat anxiety, depression and insomnia. Additionally, some research shows that it aids in reducing the symptoms of ADHD and OCD, which makes sense as we learn about all its varying advantages. Ashwagandha helps in tackling hypothyroidism, helps reduce the signs of ageing and helps lower cholesterol levels. The potent plant is also said to aid in increasing muscle mass, stamina and fertility in men. If that’s not enough, it has been reported that Ashwagandha contains anti-cancer properties!
